A fire broke out at the JWL Transport junkyard in Oak Bluffs Wednesday night, destroying numerous cars but resulting in no injuries.
Oak Bluffs firefighters were called to the scene at 9:08 p.m. when a witness reported a large explosion and flames billowing from the property, located off County Road and Pennsylvania avenue.
The crew arrived to find two buses and multiple cars and trailers on fire, said Oak Bluffs fire chief Nelson Wirtz.
Tisbury and Edgartown fire departments assisted with the blaze, and after three hours the fire was extinguished. Pennsylvania avenue and County Road, which were closed for water supply line access, reopened shortly after.
There were no injuries, Chief Wirtz said.
“We had probably close to 40 firefighters on the ground,” said Chief Wirtz. “[The vehicles] were all completely destroyed. To my knowledge, none of them were registered or roadworthy anymore anyway.”
The fire department will return to the junkyard Thursday afternoon to investigate the fire’s origin, Chief Wirtz said.
