Police arrested a man Saturday after he allegedly stabbed another man in the face and led police on an hour-long search through the woods along the Tisbury-West Tisbury town line.

West Tisbury police received a call shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday for a medical emergency on Buttonwood Farm Road where a man stabbed another man around his eye with a knife, West Tisbury police Chief Matthew Mincone said Saturday morning.

The man who was stabbed was brought to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and was being taken off-Island for further medical care, Mr. Mincone said.

After the incident, the suspect ran into the woods off Buttonwood Farm Road, drawing a large search from several agencies, including Chilmark and Tisbury police. The man was found at 9:38 a.m. and taken into custody, according to Mr. Mincone.

Mr. Mincone did not give the man’s name and said he was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The two men appeared to have come to the Island together to visit, he said.

The exact charges had not been worked out Saturday morning, but Mr. Mincone said he expected the man would, at the least, face a charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
