The Tisbury fire chief remains out on paid administrative leave more than a month after he stepped away from his duties.

Greg Leland, who took over the fire department’s top job in 2020, went out on leave for an undisclosed reason on July 11 and is still not back to work, according to town officials. At the time, Tisbury town administrator Jay Grande said the town’s attorney would be conducting a two-week review on materials received by the town.

On August 6, more than two weeks after Mr. Leland went on leave, Mr. Grande said the town’s law firm, KP Law, had completed a review and he was going to tentatively make final recommendations on what to do about Mr. Leland’s employment on August 13.

On August 16, Mr. Grande said he had no update to report.

While Mr. Leland remains away from the department, deputy Chief Patrick Rolston has been the acting fire chief.

On Tuesday, Mr. Rolston said he remains in the acting chief role, and declined to comment further.

The town’s select board was scheduled to have an executive session Tuesday afternoon to talk about the acting fire chief’s contract.

Mr. Grande previously said Mr. Leland’s leave was for non-disciplinary reasons and noted that he was not able to comment on the reason for the leave. Mr. Leland did not return a request for comment this week.

The select board appointed Mr. Leland to the chief position in May 2020, promoting him from assistant to replace retiring chief John Schilling.
