Marsha Winsyrg will speak at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. about her work with the African Artists Community Development Project. The talk is titled Zambia on My Mind. I hope to see you there.

The George Tankard, Jr. 5K road race takes place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Sculptor Barney Zeitz is hard at work making a model of Rebecca, a former enslaved woman in Chilmark. The sculpture will be part of our African American Heritage Trail. Barney invites us to his open studio on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Stop by.

The annual Wampanoag Pow Wow had a wonderful weekend last Saturday and Sunday at the Aquinnah Circle. Music, dancing, regalia, crafts and food was the order of the day.

Molly Conole and Mark Alan Lovewell ventured to Nantucket last week. They had an enjoyable lunch at the Misogi Noodle Bar and highly recommend it. Then performed a show in Nantucket. Can’t stop them from singing.

Ginny Coutinho’s son, Greg, visited from New York. I am in awe of his paintings. You may see some at the Galaxy Gallery in Oak Bluffs through Sept. 16. Ginny and Greg actually had a chance to go on some beach walks.

Another local artist, Jennifer Burkin, is offering a series of painting lessons on Tuesday afternoons from Oct. 1 through December. Don’t miss this opportunity.

In the musical arts, Jeremy Berlin will be playing piano every Thursday night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Sweet Life Cafe. We are so fortunate to have so much talent on this Island.

She passed two years ago. But her birthday was Sept. 11 and I can never forget her. Aunt Mary Alice Jannace and her husband, Uncle James Jannace, were a comfort and a beacon to me when I was growing up.
