The Steamship Authority’s M/V Island Home was back in service Friday after a tumultuous few days of travel ahead of the Christmas in Edgartown celebrations.
In leadup to one of the busiest weekends of the off-season, the Island Home ferry had an issue with its throttle system, leading to a slew of cancellations and delays starting on Monday. Turbulent weather and other ferry breakdowns added to the headaches.
On Tuesday, the Katama ferry was sent out to run in the Island Home’s stead. But because the Katama is a smaller freight ferry and as such fewer vehicles and passengers could make the crossing between the Vineyard and Woods Hole.
The Katama ferry then had its own issues and had to be taken out of service. The boat line said the ferry experienced an issue with its air compressor due to power fluctuations during the week’s storms. The Martha’s Vineyard, another large vehicle ferry, was also delayed due to a problem with its general service pump.
“We understand the frustration when we have to cancel or delay a trip, and our maintenance crews are working hard to get these issues rectified,” the Steamship Authority wrote in a statement on Thursday.
Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, the Steamship Authority announced the Island Home had been cleared to resume service starting with its 10:45 a.m. departure from Woods Hole.
“We know it has been a challenging few days for our customers and our maintenance and terminal staff, and we appreciate everyone’s hard work and patience,” the company wrote to customers.
