Last weekend we had 45 degrees outside, this week we are lucky to see 25 degrees. Of course, the windchill brings that down into the teens or lower. Warm coats, hats, scarves and mittens are the big commodities for the next couple of weeks.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Pedro Oliveira, who celebrated Jan. 19; Tabitha Brown, Henry Scott and Brian Rodrigues, Jan. 21; and to Nathan Carletti who celebrated his day Jan. 22.

It was great to see neighbors Harry and Judy Stotz here for the long weekend. Harry, who is 93 and runs a bus company in the Boston area, had to get back to get the school buses ready for the children this week. Judy told me that they are on a school schedule so they would be down hopefully next school vacation.

It is the middle of January, and I am channeling Bunny Brown. Bunny wrote this column many years ago and never missed a beat on what was going on in town. She knew people’s birthdays, when families had babies, what relatives were in town — she was great.

I remember what the big news was last year, and of course it was the new Stop & Shop. People would go in and wander for a long time trying to find what they went in for and not freezing, only to go in the next week and find it all changed around again. The joke of the winter was it was the best place to get your steps in.

I think we have somewhat become used to the layout of the store, but I still see people looking up at signs trying to find what they came in for.

Sophia Harris has started a community fiber arts group at Cozy Corner Café by the post office in Edgartown. The group meets on Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. She has 20-plus years of experience in knitting and crocheting she would share with you.

Don’t forget, Harbor Homes needs volunteers for its winter shelter; call 508-560-3678 for information.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
