The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys hockey team has partnered with the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group to raise money through custom designed jerseys that will be worn on Feb. 15 during their game against Dover-Sherborn.
The puck drops at 7 p.m.
The jerseys will be worn at the game by the players and members of the community who purchased them in advance. Already, the event has raised $5,000 for the cancer support group.
The idea stemmed from multiple players on the hockey team and coach Matt Mincone having loved ones affected by cancer.
“It’s an unbelievable cause, and whatever we can do to be part of supporting it . . . was the goal of this,” Mr. Mincone said.
The cancer support group started informally in 1986, when community members gathered to share their experiences with cancer. The support group became a nonprofit organization in 1994, and continues to meet every Wednesday over Zoom. In addition to providing emotional support, the group helps with financial assistance for those in need.
Board member Margery Meltzer recalled going to her first meeting in 1991 after being diagnosed with cancer.
“It was so wonderful meeting other people with different diagnoses who shared the same need of support outside of their families,” she said.
Ms. Meltzer said the organization is appreciative of the boys hockey team.
“The wonderful effort by the hockey team to support us and for the public to learn more about our organization...we’re very grateful for it,” she said.
The cancer support group is volunteer based and raises money through grants, fundraisers and donations, according to board member Annemarie Donahue.
“The last thing a cancer patient needs to worry about, in addition to the reality of being told that they have cancer, is finances,” she said.
The ultimate goal, she added, is to ensure that everyone going through cancer feels they have the support they need.
“We believe so strongly in our mission that no one with cancer needs to be alone,” Ms. Donahue said.
The customized white jerseys each have different colored ribbons to represent different cancer types. They were designed by hockey team alum Alex Minnehan.
Mr. Mincone said he is looking forward to the game and for the players to see what it means for the community.
“I’m hoping that the kids on the team are able to look across the ice into the stands and see this sea of white to show that this isn’t about us playing hockey at that moment,” he said. “It’s about volunteering and helping other people in times of need.”
