Richard Michelson’s latest children’s book, Next Year in the White House: Barack Obama’s First Presidential Seder, tells the story of how Passover became an annual celebration at the White House during President Obama’s administration.

The book, which is illustrated by E.B. Lewis, came out in March.

The book compares two Seders — one held by President Obama in 2009 in the White House and one held by his staff while on the campaign trail the year before.

Mr. Michelson is a longtime seasonal resident of the Vineyard and prolific author. He said he found hope in writing the story, as the kindness and decency of the events depicted are rarely seen in government.

“It was a human to human moment, the way he [President Obama] compared the history of Exodus with Black liberation movements. Many of the Civil Rights leaders, of course, felt so connected to the Jewish escape from slavery,” Mr. Michelson said.

PJ Library in New York City approached Mr. Michelson about writing the book. He asked to meet with Eric Lesser, one of the staffers who led the Seder in a hotel basement on the campaign trail, before agreeing to write the book.

“It’s often the little details that somebody tells that they don’t think are important, but give me something to personalize the story,” Mr. Michelson said.

Mr. Lesser brought Mr. Michelson items from the first White House Seder: a menu and the Haggadah — the text read over the Seder table — marked to denote when Sasha and Malia Obama would read.

The book is dedicated to the Martha’s Vineyard Polar Bears, a group of swimmers who gather at Inkwell Beach throughout the summer.

“What they do as a group is bring people of all ages and races and differences together and show them joy and respect and what a fair society could look like,” Mr. Michelson said, who is a member.
