I thought April Fool’s Day was only one day, but Mother Nature is still in her tricky mood. I am sitting here with a sweatshirt, wool slippers and an extra blanket on the bed, when two days ago I had the windows open to change the air in the house and almost turned on a fan to sleep. Welcome to New England.
Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Nathan Brodeur and Rafaella Barros, who celebrated April 5; Joao Cardoso, April 6, Italo Fernandes, Harrison Crowell, April 7, Julia Marino, Avery Ducharme, Luiz Dos Santos, April 8, Callen Foster, April 9, Hunter Gilkes, April 10, and too Jacoby Hartman, Alyssa Moreira and Arianna Clark who all celebrate their day, April 11.
Town is waking up a bit. Weekends are getting busier. The traffic is picking up a bit and you are seeing summer residents around town. It is time to start freshening up the houses for summer and landscapers are cleaning up yards and painters are getting ready to touch up houses. It is an uplifting time and we have things to look forward to after a cold winter.
In 1984, I worked at Tom’s Deli. The deli was where Wicked Burger is now. It was owned by Tom Scanlon and Phyliss Scanlon now Whorton. Tom made all the salads and required his workers to make the biggest sandwiches. I worked the night shift and from the moment I stepped into work we never stopped until closing. His reputation for homemade ribs and potato salad, plus the huge sandwiches, was worth the long lines that people waited in, especially the college kids who had meals for a few days with one visit.
So, as I think about the deli and Tom who has since passed, I also think about their grandson Ryan Scanlon and his exciting journey. He is currently appearing on Next Level Chef and being mentored by Gordon Ramsay. Ryan is Tom and Phyliss’s grandson and the son of Trevor Scanlon. I know how proud Phyliss, Trevor and his aunt Bethany are of Ryan, but I also think of how proud Tom would be of his chef grandson. We don’t know yet how far Ryan has gone on the show but no matter what, we are all so proud of him.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
