The Vineyard boys tennis team continued its dominant postseason run Monday afternoon with a commanding 5-0 victory over Groton-Dunstable in the round of 16.
The sweep began with a statement win from senior Zak Potter, who blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Caleb Dubin followed with an authoritative 6-2, 6-0 victory, and Kurt Kleeman kept the momentum going at third singles, dispatching his opponent 6-2, 6-0.
“Physically and mentally, that might be the best tennis I’ve ever played,” Potter said following the win.
In doubles action, Tommy Flynn and Kyle Levy cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win on the top court. At second doubles, Nate Walsh and Henry Wansiewicz overcame a tough second set and clinched their match with a powerful 10-2 third-set tiebreak.
Kleeman credited the team’s depth and experience as key advantages.
“We have a lot of talent,” he said. “We go really deep, five seniors in the lineup this year, so I feel like we’ve got the best chance that we’ve had in the last decade, honestly, at this school.”
With Monday’s win, the Vineyarders advance to the state quarterfinals, where they will host Cape Cod Academy on Wednesday. For many on this veteran team, it will mark their final match on home courts.
Head coach Nicole Macy emphasized the importance of staying grounded as the competition stiffens.
“We know we put in the work, we know we’ve got the talent,” Macy said. “But we also know that any team is beatable on any given day.”
The quarterfinal match against Medway will be played at MVRHS, on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
