“It took me quite a long time to develop a voice and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.”
So said one of the smartest people I always followed and admired, Madeline Albright, famous former U.S. Secretary of State. This is no time to remain silent. As for the events of last week on this Island, in Nantucket and in Hyannis I want a full accounting by a non-government committee of the tragic and frightening ICE invasion. No time to be silent.
A wonderful birthday was celebrated on Tuesday. Sandie Corr-Dolby began the 12th year of her Horizons Geriatrics. Thank you to Sandie and her hardworking staff.
Barney Zeitz, artist, sculptor and inventor, lives at 67 Deer Hill Road in Tisbury. He will open his studio for your visits on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Barney has many new works, many well-loved older works and his notecards. His works are suitable for wedding gifts, birthday gifts and gifts for yourself. Do stop by.
Another of my favorites is Louisa Gould. Her gallery on our Main street is sailing into summer with new works and new artists. Stop by for cocktails and viewing the art this Friday. Louisa sure knows how to hold a party.
In the dance department of the arts, Ginger Martin-Duarte of the Tisbury Council on Aging announces line dancing lessons at the center on Mondays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Catie is our instructor.
Chronicle WCVB TV will be on Island next week to highlight Island stories. They will be at the Inkwell beach to report on our Polar Bear Club, founded in 1946. All are welcome. See you at the beach on Tuesday, June 10 at 2:30 p.m. Come swim, exercise, meet and greet. You do not have to be a member to participate. But you may always join up.
Mary Afton Crandall, daughter of Angela Piper Murphy, graduated from Tabor Academy. Mary Afton is headed to university in southern Florida. Angela had a whirlwind weekend traveling from her new home in Virginia to the graduation, hauling all of Mary Afton’s clothes and stuff back to Virginia, and putting it away in her home there. Mary Afton’s brothers, Mercer and Hollis Kelly of Vineyard Haven, both attended the graduation. Everyone had a great time.
I received sad news that one of my dear childhood friends, Dottie Jean Zucks, died last weekend. What a sweet and interesting woman.
Great news for Island customs! Smokey the Bear is back at his post on Barnes Road guarding the Manuel Correllus State Forest. Smokey alerts us to potential fire hazards.
I hope you all have great week. Take advantage of our activities. And never be silent.
