The state medical examiner’s office has determined that John Forté, the Grammy-nominated musician who settled on the Island, died of complications from the flu.
Mr. Forté, 50, died at his family’s home in Chilmark in January. Though police said no foul play was suspected, his death was being investigated by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
On Friday, a spokesperson for the state office said complications from influenza A was the cause, and seizure disorder was a contributing condition.
A recording artist and producer, Mr. Forté was famous for his work with The Fugees on their album The Score. He also had several albums under his own name, and made music for music television and movies.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Forté came to New England as a student to attend Philips Exeter Academy and then later moved to the Vineyard, where he lived with his wife Laura Fuller and their two children, Haile and Wren.
Mr. Forté carved a path in the music industry as a hip-hop artist, singer and producer, working with some of the biggest names in hip hop in the 1990s. More recently, he worked with Island resident Dawn Porter on her Eyes on the Prize documentary for HBO.
He forged a deep bond with singer-songwriter and Island resident Carly Simon, and the two frequently collaborated.
A memorial service for Mr. Forte was held at the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Hall earlier this year.
