Swimming at Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark was halted Friday morning after lifeguards spotted a shark in the water. 

Beach superintendent Martina Mastromonaco said beach staff first spotted the shark at around 8:30 a.m. and it has been hanging out in the area. 

“I was hoping it would take off by now,” she said. 

Guards go out and check the surf every morning when the beach opens and they noticed the shark, which they believed to be a mako shark. 

“He was jumping out of the water,” Ms. Mastromonaco said. 

The town brought in firefighter Jon Mayhew to fly a drone up to get a better view and confirmed the sighting, she said. 

Friday’s sighting in Chilmark comes just days after a possible shark bite at South Beach in Edgartown. 

In an interview this week, Massachusetts shark biologist Greg Skomal said the region’s waters is home to several types of sharks, including great whites, sandbar sharks and sand tiger sharks. 

The woman who was injured in the potential bite did not lose a limb and the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
