I use to call my mother in Vineyard Haven every night. I might say “Boy, what a dreary day with the fog and overcast,” and she would frequently respond “Really? It was beautiful all day here.” She was right — even Oak Bluffs had sun and we were overcast. That’s how it was this week for a couple of days: Edgartown gloomy while OB is all sunshine. We get our payback in August, though, when it is cooler here than almost anywhere on the island.
After surviving Memorial Day weekend, I can honestly say not much has changed this week. It is still busy, there are lots of people, and town is hopping. I went into town last Wednesday, could not find a parking space, and dealt with long lines at the Stop and Shop. That’s okay. We just have to get used to leaving a few minutes earlier and remember that we are not going to dash into the store and get out fast. We have been doing it for years, but it always takes a little time to adjust.
School is almost out and parents are always looking for something for their kids to do. Felix Neck is offering Camp for a Day on June 19, 20 and 21, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Kids aged four through ten will get to explore all the different habitats that make up their wildlife sanctuary, through outdoor games, nature activities, hikes, stories, crafts and more. It’s $79 a day for members and $96 a day for non-members.
The pollen has been the talk of the week. Everyone’s car is green. People have posted pictures of tables on which the word pollen is written with a finger. All are saying that their eyes feel as though they are full of sand. Now we wait for the rain to wash it away.
The plentiful rosa rugosa along Beach Road is beautiful. Their aroma takes me back to many fun times on the beach. I’ve always wished for the patience to make rose hip jam. I understand it is very time consuming with all the little seeds in the rose hips, but they are full of Vitamin C.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Isabella Silva who celebrated on June 1; Jonathan De Oliveira, Kyle Levy and Brenda Sampaio on June 2; and Nayla Abreu who celebrates her day today, June 7.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
