Several years ago, writer and teacher Naomi Jackson began encountering more and more participants in her workshops who did not so much need discussions on craft and technique. Rather, they needed help getting on with their particular project. They just needed to write.

She soon began crafting a workshop focusing on how to finish a novel. She has delivered these workshops during semester-long college classes and shorter versions. Next week she leads a five-day workshop on the Vineyard, from July 10 to 14, entitled This Summer, You Write Your Novel. The workshop takes place at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

“It is designed to inspire writers to finish projects they have started,” she said by phone from her home in Brooklyn. “We move from outline to shaping the project.”

The workshop is part of the summer programming for the Noepe Center for Literary Arts, which also hosts a reading by Ms. Jackson on Thursday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Featherstone. Ms. Jackson is the author of the The Star Side of Bird Hill. Currently she is working on a new novel entitled Beyond God’s Back, a multi-generational historical novel taking place in Brooklyn from the 1930s to the 2000s.

Next up at Noepe is a workshop by Bret Anthony Johnston, who headed up the creative writing program at Harvard University for 11 years and is currently the director of the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas in Austin. Mr. Johnston’s workshop is called Deconstructing the Short Story and takes place July 17 to 21. He will give a reading on July 18 at 5:30 p.m. at Featherstone. There are a few spaces left in each workshop.

For Ms. Jackson, writing and teaching go hand in hand.

“It gets you back to the basics of how writing gets done,” she said.
