Tisbury will celebrate its 350th birthday on Sept. 19 with music, dancing and a community barbecue in downtown Vineyard Haven.
“It’s a full-on day of celebration,” said event planner Nevette Previd, a Tissbury resident who is working with the town cultural council and business association to put the anniversary party together.
Ms. Previd told members of the Tisbury select about the plans at their regular online meeting last week.
Covid complications have left organizers in a time crunch, Vineyard Haven Business Association president Sarah York said, and a program for the anniversary is still coming together.
Ms. Previd said the Flying Elbows string band will play for dancing and other musicians will appear in Owen Park, perhaps with storytellers as well.
“We really felt like the storytelling was going to be a really good thing to bring to the event,” Ms. York said.
The 350th anniversary also represents a fundraising opportunity for the Tisbury School building project, town administrator Jay Grande said.
Mr. Grande asked the board to approve a simple licensing agreement granting exclusive permission to use the town seal on merchandise to benefit the school project.
Ms. York said the business association will not take any proceeds from sales of town-authorized hats, T-shirts, commemorative coins and other merchandise supporting the school project.
The select board agreed to issue the license.
