In the hint of a cool September breeze is the wafting of the waning summer.

The breeze arrives on the southern shore of the Island, pushing seven-foot swells onto the beach. The breeze winds through the beach grass and slips away through rosa rugosa.

It gains in momentum as it travels the Island, making sure to blow out the scent of crowded streets and spilled beer on Circuit avenue. Time to make room for the crisp air of fall, the thick odor of evening fires and cleaned fish.

Finally the breeze takes the summer away, across the Sound as it follows the ferries to Woods Hole. In time, the breeze will turn to the Atlantic and leave the mainland until next summer.

The Autumn equinox comes Wednesday at 3:20 p.m.
