An Edgartown man who was arrested for the April armed robbery of a Falmouth bank was charged in federal court this week.
Petar Petyoshin, 40, is facing one count of bank robbery after law enforcement officials say he stole more than $21,000 from the Rockland Trust bank on Davis Straits at gunpoint on April 8.
Mr. Petyoshin, who was previously arrested at the Island's registry of motor vehicles on state charges in May, allegedly went into the bank just before 9 a.m. that day in April, sporting a blond wig, sunglasses and a surgical mask. Once inside, he placed what he claimed was a bomb on the bank teller counter and pulled out a handgun.
“I’m robbing you,” he told one bank employee, according to federal law enforcement officials.
Mr. Petyoshin, who worked at the Oak Bluffs water district, had customers and bank employees zip-tie each other’s hands together and forced two tellers to hand over $21,579 in cash from the bank. He then fled in a car he stole from a customer, according to police.
Surveillance footage from the area showed a man matching Mr. Petyoshin’s description entering a nearby grocery store parking lot in a gray van prior to the robbery. The man walked on foot towards the bank and could be seen returning to the vehicle about 15 minutes after he made off with the money.
A van similar to the one in the grocery store parking lot boarded a 7 a.m. Steamship Authority ferry departing the Island earlier that day, and then returned on the ferry later that afternoon.
Mr. Petyoshin was the registered owner of the van and cell site information located him in the area of the Rockland Trust at the time of the robbery, federal investigators said.
The Facebook page for Dapper, Mr. Petyoshin’s Circuit avenue clothing store, also displayed photos of the jacket, sunglasses and wig he allegedly wore during the heist.
When police arrested Mr. Petyoshin on May 23, his Edgartown apartment was searched and police found thousands of dollars in cash bundled together in Rockland Trust money bands, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Zip ties and the clothing worn by the robbery suspect were also at the home.
Police seized 57 firearms and a large quantity of ammunition in the search. The jacket Mr. Petyoshin allegedly wore at the bank was also recovered in his personal locker at the water district.
Mr. Petyoshin’s name was quietly removed from the water district staff list shortly after he was arrested.
A bank robbery charge can carry a sentence of up to 25 years in prison. The federal complaint against Mr. Petyoshin was filed on Wednesday and he remains in custody. A further court date has not been set.
