A 60-year-old woman is in critical condition after the SUV she was in hit a telephone pole Thursday night and careened into Sunset Lake in Oak Bluffs.
Police responded to the lake at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday after a 31-year-old woman crashed the car, snapping the pole, Oak Bluffs police said in a statement Friday.
The woman was out of the car when officers arrived and a 35-year-old man who was a passenger in the SUV was in the water. The man’s feet were trapped under the vehicle, and he told officers that his mother was unconscious and stuck in the back of the vehicle, which was submerged.
Police said they waded into the near freezing water and thick mud to cut away the airbags and enter the vehicle, according to the statement.
Police were able to bring the woman ashore and found she was not breathing and had no pulse. Police administered CPR until ambulance crews arrived. All three occupants were taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
The 31-year old driver and the man suffered minor injuries and remained at the hospital Friday afternoon.
The mother was airlifted to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where she remains in critical condition, police said.
The family was driving from an establishment in Edgartown en route to a home in Tisbury when they crashed the SUV, according to police. Police say the initial investigation indicates speeding and alcohol were contributing factors.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing and charges are expected to be filed against the driver.
