It’s summertime and Martha’s Vineyard looks like one big landscape oil painting. Simply perfect and bursting with both subtle shades and vibrant colors. Shame the Island is too big to pop in the trunk of the car and take home to remember such perfection all winter long. We have tried, but no go, even with one of those clamshells on the roof-rack. Chappy keeps blowing off midway home and ending up in the tall weeds somewhere off 95.

Luckily there are artists here giving us the next best thing, representations of the Island the perfect size for hanging on the walls back home.

This weekend at the Shaw Cramer Gallery at 56 Main street there will be landscapes aplenty at their artists’ reception featuring Leslie Baker, Gary Magakis, Mary Scrimgeour, Kari Lønning and Rose Abrahamson. The reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 1. Ms. Abrahamson will give a talk about her work on Saturday, July 2 at 6 p.m. also at the gallery.

Not all of the artists on display devote their time to landscapes. Mr. Magakis creates bronze with mixed metal tables and lamps, Ms. Scrimgeour composes mixed media paintings and Kari Lønning’s hand-dyed and woven baskets are internationally collected.
