There will be a few new faces on the ballot when Island residents go to the polls in November for the state election.
While some key state races will be decided, including a race for governor, Vineyard voters will also decide races closer to home. Seats on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, county commission and up-Island school committee are on the ballot.
There are nine at-large elected seats on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, and nine candidates are on the ballot. Incumbents Jim Vercruysse of Aquinnah, Joshua Goldstein and Clarence A. (Trip) Barnes 3rd of Tisbury, Fred Hancock of Oak Bluffs, E. Douglas Sederholm and Linda Sibley of West Tisbury, and Christina Brown of Edgartown are all running for re-election.
Robert McMillen Doyle of Chilmark and Abraham Sieman of Oak Bluffs are also running.
At least one and not more than two can be elected from each town.
Incumbent county commissioners John S. Alley of West Tisbury, Leon A. Brathwaite 2nd of West Tisbury and Christine Todd of Oak Bluffs will seek two-year terms on the Dukes County Commission, which has seven members. David J. Holway of Edgartown was appointed as a temporary commissioner in August and is also running on the November ballot. He was appointed to replace Melinda Loberg, who is now a Tisbury selectman. County manager Martina Thornton said she expected several write-in votes as well. Noreen Mavro Flanders is seeking another term as county treasurer.
In Chilmark, Aquinnah, and West Tisbury, voters will also cast ballots for the up-Island school district committee. The five-member committee includes representatives from the three towns, and two at-large members. Elections are every four years.
Candidates include incumbents Michael Marcus and Jeffrey (Skipper) Manter of West Tisbury. Mr. Manter, a West Tisbury selectman and police sergeant, has served on the committee for nearly two decades. Mr. Marcus is the committee chairman.
Current committee member Roxanne Ackerman of Aquinnah and newcomers Theresa Manning of Aquinnah, Kate Devane of West Tisbury, and Robert Lionette of Chilmark plan to run as write-ins, according to Vineyard schools superintendent Dr. James H. Weiss, who also serves as clerk for the up-Island school district.
The election is Nov. 4 and includes many statewide contests.
Absentee ballots are available at town halls prior to the election.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 15.
