After a brief period of uncertainty, Flatbread will again open for the upcoming season, though the summer home of wood-fired pizza and music performances is still on the market.
Owner Jay Gould confirmed Wednesday that the restaurant will be open this summer, serving up pizza with local ingredients and hosting several music events. The decision was made earlier this week, he said.
“We’re looking forward to being on the Vineyard,” Mr. Gould told the Gazette in a telephone conversation.
In early January, the Flatbread building was placed on the market for $1.15 million. The building is co-owned by Brion McGroarty, who also owns MV Wine and Spirits next door. At the time, Mr. Gould said that the seasonal business model had been a challenge for Flatbread, and that doing well in July and August alone was not sustainable.
The building remains for sale at the same asking price.
“We tried to find somebody to purchase it, and it didn’t work out, so we figured why not give it another go and have fun, and see what we can do,” Mr. Gould said. He said he expects to host about 10 music events, including the annual Stars and Stripes concert, which benefits the YMCA and has been hosted at Flatbread since its inception. Flatbread opened in 2010; the building is the former home of the Hot Tin Roof and Outerland.
“We’ll do some stuff that we’re familiar with,” Mr. Gould said.
Last month, Edgartown selectmen approved a transfer of the Flatbread’s liquor license from former manager Tina Miller to a Flatbread employee from the company’s main office in Vermont. Mr. Gould said he is in talks with two Providence residents to manage the facility over the summer.
“We’re putting together a business plan for the summer,” he said. An opening date has not yet been set.
The restaurant, which is only open in the summer season, has seen little change since January.
“It’s basically ready to go,” Mr. Gould said.
