A message from the past will be unveiled this weekend as the Vineyard Haven library hosts a time capsule opening ceremony.
In January 1967, sixth graders at the Tisbury school, led by teacher Dorothy R. Howell, placed a time capsule in the wall of the Vineyard Haven Public Library, with plans to open it 50 years in the future. That time has finally come, and this weekend the library will invite those students and the public to witness the time capsule’s unveiling on Saturday, April 29 at 4 p.m. at the library.
The library was under construction when the time capsule was placed in the wall. When the library was renovated and expanded in 1998, Mrs. Howell and former student H. Lester Baptiste supervised its relocation inside a wall in a new building. The town Department of Public Works recently put a camera inside the wall to locate the capsule, which appears to still be intact.
Students in Mrs. Howell’s 1966-1967 sixth grade class earned money to purchase supplies and a commemorative plaque by engraved by Melvin Doremus. Besides Mr. Baptiste they included: Linda Alley, Tom Bardwell, Edward Buckley, Cindy Burgess, Richard Clark, Janet Cottle, Brian Dolby, Debbie Fitzpatrick, Steven Hopp, Chad Johnson, Joan Johnson, Belinda Maseda, Ann Richards, Dennis Rogers, John Schilling, Elmer Silva, Martha Sprague, Joyce Stiles, Carol Thatcher, and David Vanderhoop.
Items found in the capsule will be on display at the library throughout May. They will also be displayed on the Facebook page facebook.com/TisburyTimeCapsule.
