Update: She’s home. Sweet Jane Slater is back at her Basin Road home in some discomfort but reminding herself that all the adventures that come along with her new knee will be worth it.
The Keefes are back in town. Craig, Lori, Quinn, Allie and Grady have just swooped in from their winter residence in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Although they have a lot of news to share I will give you the summarized form. Craig has had his shoulder rebuilt. Quinn managed to put an ax through his foot and Allie is missing her appendix. Ouch, ouch and ouch is the only reasonable response to the trials and tribulations of the Keefe clan. Here’s to a relaxed summer surrounded by friends, fish and Cow Tails. Don’t worry folks, Cow Tails are caramel candy.
Marjorie Good, fondly know to her friends as Midge, died on March 4 at the remarkable age of 99. Although she didn’t live at her Basin Road house year round, Chilmark has always felt like home. Abel’s Hill Cemetery will be her final resting place after a service at the West Tisbury Congregational Church at noon on July 1. All are welcome to celebrate the life of Midge. Please join friends and family to share stories of gardens, sunsets and sweet conversations. Sweet conversation was plentiful in the presence of Midge. If you should have any questions, please contact her daughter in law, Betsy at 203-668-8383.
Rhoda Diamond is back at her South Road home after attending her 75th Radcliffe College class of 1942 reunion where Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook fame was a commencement day speaker. Rhoda was flanked by her sons Paul and John. At the age of 96 she was the eldest Radcliffe alumni in attendance and was publicly honored by the alumni association president. How remarkable.
Gabe Ambulos is playing for the Boston Rams U 18 boys soccer team in the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 Championships in Spotsylvania, Va. this week. Good luck to the team as I hear competition is fierce.
Last Sunday folks at the Chilmark Church said farewell to the Revs. Vicky and Armen Hanjian. I understand they have been just wonderful to the church community but it’s time for a change, so please welcome Rev. Charlotte Wright and her husband, Don. They will be taking up residency at the Parsonage so be sure to throw up your arm with a friendly wave or shout out a hello when you pass.
David Norton, our fearless and faithful fire chief, is home and on the mend after a week-long stint at MGH. He’s one of those self-sufficient crickers so I won’t go into detail but, rather, I’ll shout out a thank you to the firefighter’s association members, Bernie Levy, the DeBlase family, the Malkins, the Karlinskys, the MacLeods, Lisa Nichols, Linda Coutinho, Julie Flanders, of course David’s daughter Holly, and so many more for helping nurse David back to health. Glad your feisty personality is still with us.
Anne and Robert Perschel are thrilled to have their Spring Point home overflowing with visitors this month. Their son Jordan, who currently resides in Chicago, will be in town with Arielle Schwartz, who will enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of the Vineyard for the first time. Lifelong family friend Pierrette Kelly is traveling from Rome to enjoy, among other things, sunset views over Vineyard Sound. May blue skies, light billowy breezes and fiery sunsets fill your July days.
Jay Lagemann’s 18-foot-tall cast bronze sculpture, Swinging Jenny, was dedicated in New York city last Friday with a well-represented family entourage in the mix. Marianne Neill was there for the excitement along with daughters Jennifer Christy and Chris Hodges. Also in attendance were Jen’s children Dash, El and Wren and Chris’s children Sophia, Sam and Malia and husband Barney. The Hodges family traveled from Vermont for the occasion. Jenny is cantilevered out 26 feet in front of the new apartment building, VIA57 West, constructed by the Durst Organization on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Save that date! On August 6 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival will take over the community center grounds with a remarkable collection of authors speaking in various tents. This two-day event begins August 5 at the Harbor View. There are a number of familiar names on the lineup including, among others, Susie Middleton, Joan Nathan and Sarah Waldman. Sarah happens to have a couple of wee ones who frolic on that same field during the school year. Check out mvbookfestival.com for more details and scheduling updates.
Julie Coleman reports that the Coleman Clan will be back in full swing at their South Road home. Husband Bill will swoop in after an Icelandic adventure. Daughter Chandra, along with her husband Lawrence and children Lucas, Ella and Colette, will arrive with their cousin Kristina, her husband Chris and daughter Olivia. All will be in residence just in time to celebrate Ella’s seventh birthday on July 1. Kristina is the daughter of Evelyn Kreyling, who will also be in the mix having fun, fun, fun. Julie plans to be here through mid-September so I’ll bet she will have some trail hikes planned.
Likely we all now know that Liz, Kevin, Solon, Barrett, Delilah and Hollis Oliver are back at the helm of Menemsha Market. What you might not know is starting on June 30 they will have a selection of baked goods from Scottish Bakehouse. Croissants, muffins, sandwiches and few other tasty treats will round out what yummy eats Menemsha has to offer. And don’t forget, if you like the old school way of reading world news with smudgy ink on your fingers then the market has what you need. The Cape Cod Times, Boston Globe, New York Times and Wall Street Journal, in addition to the Vineyard Gazette and MV Times, will be available for purchase.
In other foodie news, Karsten has opened his sashimi shack. He and Katie Thompson hope to be there from 4 to 7 p.m. daily with an expanded list of offerings. In addition to the sashimi Karsten made locally famous when he first popped up his shack along the bulkhead in 2015, the duo will offer an small variety of sushi items and a raw bar offering local littlenecks. Although the raw bar isn’t functional just yet, both dragon and California rolls among others have been a hit.
