While most oceangoers hope to avoid shark encounters, Dr. Greg Skomal goes looking for them. Mr. Skomal is a senior fisheries scientist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, former Vineyard resident, and preeminent shark expert. He has tagged more than 100 great white sharks in the waters around the Cape and Islands, part of an effort to find out more about the ocean’s apex predators.

Next week Mr. Skomal will come to the Vineyard to share information about his great white shark research. His talk, titled Seeing Deeper into the World of Great White Sharks, takes place Tuesday, August 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church. The event is presented by The Boneyard.

A suggested donation of $20 per person will benefit Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Children 12 and under will be admitted for free.
