Spring, winter, spring, winter. That’s how this past month felt. I, like most people, am ready to store away the sweaters and boots, etc. But I am afraid that if I do we may never see warm weather. But like every other year we will be cold one day and then it will be hot for the rest of the summer season. We never really have a spring.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Finnegan McDonald, Samuel Resto, Matthew Ribeiro and Paige Smith who all celebrated their day April 28, Clara Rabeni, April 29, Ariel Meyer, April 30, Nicholas Rabeni, May 2, and to Paige Anderson who celebrated her day May 3.

There was a question on Islanders Talk if there was an IGA in Vineyard Haven. The answer was yes and it was where the post office is now. I remember going in there when we first moved to the Island and of course until it closed. The Lope sisters were the cashiers and Mr. Vieira, Linda Metell’s father, was the meat cutter. It is funny how one simple question can take you back and you remember all those things.

It also brings you back to thinking how downtown Edgartown was. There was an A&P where Alchemy is right now. Then there was the Edgartown Market which was the big market when I moved to Edgartown. I can still see Elmer Santos in his meat coat with his cigar in his mouth. The Paper Store was where Scoops is and of course the post office where Murdick’s Fudge is. So many changes and town was always hopping.

The Edgartown Council on Aging, also known as the Anchors, is seeking Edgartown residents as new volunteer board members to advise and supervise the COA, which is a department of the town of Edgartown providing services, events, activities, and programs to Edgartown and Island elders. The board meets once a month, 10 months out of the year, to provide support and guidance. The meetings are pleasant, fun, interesting and no longer than an hour and a half. The family is very appreciative and thankful to all those who have donated so far.

The Edgartown library is seeking artists — painters and photographers — to exhibit their work in the program room, with dates available in June, July, and August. The display wall is approximately 50 feet wide and 10 feet high, and the space has dedicated gallery viewing hours throughout the summer. Go to the library’s website to find its art exhibit policy and for the exhibition space application form.
