Spring time in Aquinnah, temperature in the 50s and 60s. No more frost. April showers brought an abundance of Mayflowers that are enjoyed during your walk down paths in the woods. The planting of beach grass on Sunday was a successful day for the tribe.
Free sign language classes are beginning at the Aquinnah Public Library for the month of May. All age levels are encouraged to participate. It was a pleasure to have Barbara Lampson back at the library and filling in for the month of April.
Aquinnah town meeting is on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. and voting is on Wednesday.
The Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group will hold their annual Shellfish Extravaganza Friday evening at the Chilmark Community Center from 6 to 10 p.m. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish will entertain while you dine on delicacies from the raw bar, have a cup of chowder, and splurge at the silent auction. Tickets available at the door. Have fun.
The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard is sponsoring an Aquinnah voter forum prior to the local election. There are contested races for Board of Selectmen this year, and there should be some lively discussions. The forum will be held at the Aquinnah Old Town Hall on Saturday, May 5 at 3 p.m.
Congratulations to the West Tisbury School students with their Safe Sea Martha’s Vineyard campaign to prevent the intentional release of lighter than air balloons into the atmosphere which will affect the fish, sea turtles, and other species causing choking and becoming imbedded in their digestive tracts. On April 13, 21 West Tisbury students attended an award ceremony at the State House where they accepted a Green Difference Award from Project Green Schools. Kudos.
John, Amy and Zach Macey have returned to their home in Woodbridge, Conn. after a brief stay at their Aquinnah home.
Noah James Manning and his parents Paul and Theresa returned home over the past week after attending the State House Green Difference award ceremony at the beginning of their vacation, then it was off to Washington, D.C. where they participated in the Science March, visited the Air & Space Museum, displayed the Safe Sea MV poster in front of the White House, toured the National Museum of the American Indians as well as a few monuments, and enjoyed the National Zoo with Chris and Kendra Buresch Carroll and their daughters Oona and Emme. On the way home, they visited with Theresa’s sister Liz and her husband Rick Long at their home in Pennsylvania for a few days. Then it was on to a tour of Philadelphia, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and the Mint. The final day of vacation was spent at the Mystic Aquarium. A very educational time.
Alexandra Taylor and her daughters Olive and Violet MacPhail returned home over the weekend after spending 10 days in the Bahamas with Captain Hugh and Jeanne Taylor. Alexandra enjoyed the April weather on their island, as opposed to their usual February stay. She recently returned from Italy as a chaperone with the Charter School students. Back in time to open the Outermost Inn by May 18 with her family.
Isaac Taylor will be performing on Sunday evening with Willy Mason at Club Passim in Cambridge. Have you noticed Isaac’s new red Japanese fire truck around town? Only to compete in the neighborhood with Shaun MacPhail’s recently purchased 1936 Ford truck.
Tobias J. Vanderhoop returned to Ketchikan, Alaska on Tuesday after spending a few days at home visiting family and friends and attending the spring social at the tribe. Tobias has been working as the Administrator/CEO for the Ketchikan Indian Community for the past six months.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Lynn C. Murphy, Jr. who passed away a week ago following a motorcycle accident. His memorial service will be held during the summer.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Ora Ferreira Reardon who passed away recently in Maine. Ora was a schoolmate at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.
Sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jan Van Riper who passed away a week ago at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Jan was a tireless volunteer at the hospital for three decades, tallying more than 1,000 hours as a volunteer.
