Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day, as the song lyrics go. However, this past Monday was a beautiful day and I hope that we might see more spring and sun. I tell you just one day of sun changed the Island. People were happy and out and the trees and flowers and everything that depends on the sun was flourishing. It was the start of something nice.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Jonas DeOliveira and Jenife Santos, who celebrated May 20; Nicholas Ribeiro, May 21; Lukas Smith, May 22; Cayden Bresett and Espen Desquenne, May 23; and to Anita Cabral, and Gabriel DaSilva who celebrate their day May 25.
Special birthday wishes to the Welch cousins, Beatrice Welch who celebrated her day May 15 and is 11 years old, and cousin Keira Welch who celebrated her ninth birthday on May 16.
Happy birthday to Kristina Ivory who will celebrate her day Sunday, May 27. Here is to many more.
The sounds of spring are showing this week. We have seen many students walking around applying for jobs, the biplane has been flying overhead, and I heard the sound I always listen for in my neighborhood which is the ping of a baseball bat hitting a ball at the ball field.
Last Wednesday night at the Edgartown Fire Station, three special men retired from the Department: Paul Bagnell, Peter Wells and Chief Peter Shemeth.
It was a night of memories and thanks and tears. I thought it was funny they all got axes as gifts when they technically did not get the axe! (Get it?)
Anyway, there were many fellow firemen from all the towns and young new firemen and even men who have no longer been part of the department for a long time. Woody Cushman came from Westerly, R.I. to partake in the night along with Larry Thomas, Peter Valenti, Jim Craves, who are all now retired. I hope you all enjoy your retirement.
People are starting to arrive. My friends Carol Goldberg and Pat Rodgers have returned to visit at the nursery. It is great to see them and catch up on their winters.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick from Vineyard Haven was in the other day. I was in the same class with her daughter Kathy Mercier. We were known as the Chatty Cathys of the class. I don’t know where they got that from! Anyway, we were talking about the school and it reminded me of when I first moved here in the third grade and when Friday came all the kids were talking about getting cookies after school. I did not know what that meant and one of my classmates told me to follow them.
It seems there were these two retired school teachers on Look street and every Friday one of them, I still don’t know her name, would make cookies and would open her door those afternoons and serve them to all the kids that showed up. Now being new, and from a city, that was never heard of — we were not allowed to take things from strangers. However the women weren’t strangers if all the kids were going there. So I joined the huge line that led to that house and enjoyed the fresh baked cookies. I never said anything to my parents thinking they would get angry at me taking food from someone I did not know, but between the chocolate on my face and people talking to my parents I am sure they knew why I was always late getting home on Fridays. That was such a great memory and I wish I knew those teachers’ names.
I hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Day, but I like to remind people the real reason for this holiday other than family gatherings or traveling on a long weekend, because if it were not for the servicemen and women who have served or are serving our country we would not be celebrating. So please take five minutes of your weekend and thank these special men and women.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
