There will be a significant lunar eclipse later this month worth talking about now. If the weather is fair no one should miss it, as it is one of the easiest to see. Late in the evening of Sunday, Jan. 20 the moon will begin entering into the Earth’s shadow. The earliest signs of the moon entering the shadow will be seen later than 10 p.m., with totality at 12:15 a.m., shortly after midnight on Monday morning.

We haven’t had an easily viewable lunar eclipse for quite a while so this will be a treat. The moon will be in the zodiacal constellation Gemini about as high in the sky, close to the zenith, as the moon gets. There will be no trees, no imposing skyline to prevent viewing. The moon will be right overhead.

This Sunday night the moon is in the first quarter phase and a short distance from the bright red planet Mars. Both are in the zodiacal constellation Pisces.
