If you close your eyes and don’t look at the calendar, you would swear it was April 1 not May 13. As I sit and write this they are predicting snow north of Boston. The gardens are going to be late.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out Alexandra Guerrero and Edward Rosbeck, who celebrated their day May 12; Russell Coogan, Broden Couto, Maria Sanchez Roa and Elisa Siria, May 14; Mateo Deoliveria and Joao Nunes, May 15; and Bianca Nunes who celebrates her day today, May 17.
We at the nursery are still getting ready for Memorial Day and lots of plantings, but it is hard to get into things when you are wearing sweatshirts, hoods and gloves. The tropical plant truck arrived today and we were hoping some warm air would arrive with it.
Pink and Green weekend seemed to be a success. A lot of happy people came through to enjoy the flowers and cake, and the kids made flower crowns and wore them proudly home. It was a good night for young and old. On Saturday there were many events going on in town. While I did not see it personally, I enjoyed the pictures of the blessing of the animals, who were also dressed in pink and green.
This is the season when college students are coming home. Tom and Amy Sullivan’s daughter Lila has just graduated from Keene State College. John Gonsalves is home after his freshman year and will be working at the fire station as a first responder. Conor Bettencourt just finished his freshman year and will be back on the streets again as a special officer in Edgartown. So proud of these young adults — congratulations and keep up the good work.
Oystercatchers, plovers and terns, oh my! Felix Neck has new offerings on the calendar, such as a free tracking shorebirds workshop on two upcoming Saturdays, May 18 and June 22 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. You’ll walk the beach with their shorebird biologist to record field data, search for birds and nests, and identify bird and mammal tracks in the sand. Meet at the State Beach access trail on the Oak Bluffs side of the big bridge.
Phil Wallis, executive director of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, will speak at the Federated Church as part of their community partners program. Join them on May 19 following the 10:30 a.m. church service.
Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
