They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky, they're the Martha's Vineyard Public Charter School's scarecrows. The straw-filled seasonal guests have been popping up across the Vineyard guarding Island businesses and keeping wayward birds where they belong. This year's theme was literary characters. The Mad Hatter, Viola Swamp (the meanest substitute teacher in the whole world), Frankenstein, and the late Oak Bluffs author Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree are all included. Local businesses purchase a scarecrow for a donation to the charter school.
