Rise dancers dance to the jingle bell beat. Peter Simon

Saturday, December 9, 2017

Reindeer, snowmen, even Santa himself: a large cast of holiday characters marched down Main street Edgartown Saturday for the annual Christmas parade, part of Christmas in Edgartown weekend. Umbrellas and rainboots joined Santa hats and jingle bells as the accessory of the day as a steady rain fell throughout the parade, but wet weather did not dim spirits.

Dancers from Rise and Spindrift set the beat as they boogied along, while several dogs joined the crew at The Black Dog float. The Boy Scouts and the Coast Guard, the pink whale mascot from Vineyard Vines, gingerbread men from Stop & Shop and St. Nicholas himself, from St. Andrew's Church, all joined in the merry group. Some tossed candy and stuffed animals to the crowd, with children dashing in the rain to pick up treasures. There were horses dressed as reindeer, too, but Santa leaves his sleigh up north for the parade. Instead he arrived on Edgartown fire engine 34, greeted by cheers and waves from his many fans.
