Aquinnah's beacon, the Gay Head Light, guides mariners through Vineyard Sound. Timothy Johnson

Sunday, February 5, 2017

Take a look and listen to the conversation of an Island caught somewhere between winter and spring. Skunks begin to wake from their seasonal slumber. Snowdrops begin to flower in Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury. And in Oak Bluffs blooming forsythia heralds the war between seasons. The Island is accustomed to an occasional winter thaw in February. Indeed, it’s a tradition around here. Memories of tennis on a warm winter's day help to brighten the chill gray months that launch the start of any new year. But the rhythms of this Island winter seem particularly muddled.
