Sixty-four hikers set off from the Chilmark Pond Preserve at 8 a.m. Saturday, a healthy crowd for Martha's Vineyard Land Bank's 23rd annual Cross-Island Hike. In honor of National Trails Day, the land bank hosts a day-long guided hike across Island conservation land.
The rains finally came this week and our month-long wait ended. Beach roses displayed droplets on their unfurling petals while umbrellas were found in the back of closets and brought out again. Later in the week the sun reappeared but the Island had a needed and cleansing shower.

Working at an accelerated pace, workers expect to finish the Gay Head Light move Saturday morning.
On Thursday, the Gay Head Light started to depart from the location where it has rested for nearly 160 years.
The Gay Head Light is ready for its big move, which is now scheduled for Thursday, May 28. On Tuesday afternoon, the 1856 lighthouse stood in the center of an enormous excavation, balanced on the wood and steel frame that will travel with the lighthouse.
