A new exhibit at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Clifford: Our Big Red Dog, opened on Saturday, celebrating the Clifford phenomenon and the life of creator Norman Bridwell, a longtime resident of Edgartown.
The 37th annual Art Buchwald Possible Dreams Auction will be held on Sunday, July 26 at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Edgartown. This year’s auction will celebrate Norman Bridwell, the beloved creator of Clifford the Big Red Dog.
Family, friends, and admirers of the late Norman Bridwell, who died in December, gathered at the Federated Church Monday for a memorial service honoring the longtime Edgartown resident and author and illustrator well-known for the Clifford the Big Red dog series.
A celebration of life for longtime Edgartown resident Norman Bridwell, illustrator and author of the Clifford the Big Red Dog series, will be held on Monday, July 20 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Federated Church in Edgartown.
This year’s Art Buchwald Possible Dreams auction, which benefits Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, will be dedicated to the late author Norman Bridwell.
Norman Bridwell, who died last week at 86, was living proof that there really are no absolutes in life, and that especially includes rejection. The story has been told a hundred times.
Tributes and expressions of sympathy were heard around the country for the acclaimed illustrator and children’s author who delighted multiple generations with his books.
Among the green-trimmed houses on High street in Edgartown, Norman Bridwell’s home sticks out. The shutters and doors are bright red. And in the window hangs a paper-sized illustration of a familiar dog —a big, red dog to be exact.
“Red has been good to me,” said Mr. Bridwell (84) at his home last week.
They are both artists, both Indiana natives who met in New York city although today Norma and Norman Bridwell are more closely associated with Edgartown and their home on High street with the red shutters where they have lived since 1969.
They have two grown children. Oh, and don’t forget Clifford. He’s the big red dog that Norman Bridwell created 45 years ago in what would become his award-winning children’s book series. The Bridwells celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, June 13. They call it their lucky day.
