Oak Bluffs police have arrested two men following a weeklong investigation into the theft of a large amount of cash from an East Chop home.

Five babies in five months for four Oak Bluffs police officers and one state trooper. “I guess the stars aligned,” said Officer James Hagerty.

Responding to criticism about the police department at the annual town meeting, Erik Blake plans initiatives to improve community relations.

James Hagerty took the oath of office as the newest full time police officer in Oak Bluffs during a swearing-in ceremony Tuesday.

The Oak Bluffs police department welcomed a new member last week as police officer Timothy Millerick was sworn in March 18 at the police station.

Just in time for peak season, the Oak Bluffs police department has promoted three police officers while hiring another officer to join the ranks.

Oak Bluffs native Nicholas Curelli was named sergeant last month after sailing through a grueling promotional process, police chief Erik Blake said.

Michael Cotrone, a former army captain, was sworn in as a full-time Oak Bluffs police officer on Wednesday. Mr. Cotrone graduated from the Plymouth Police Academy last Friday where he was president of his class.

Erik G. Blake, chief of police for Oak Bluffs, has been elected to serve as the president of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association.

Mr. Blake is the first Vineyard chief to lead the Grafton-based organization. He will be sworn in on Dec. 12 in Falmouth, and will serve for one year.

The third weekend in July was again a busy time for the Oak Bluffs police department, which reported a busier-than-normal weekend in light of the shark tournament and festival. But while last year police said they felt overwhelmed, this year the department reported that an increased police presence may have deterred more serious incidents.

The department reported that between Thursday, July 18 and Sunday, July 21, police responded to 175 incidents, making 25 arrests and placing four people into protective custody.

An Oak Bluffs man who had fallen into the harbor early Thursday morning and was struggling to stay afloat was rescued when police officers from Tisbury and Oak Bluffs rushed to his aid.

Officers pulled Nelson Ferreira, 40, from the Oak Bluffs harbor at approximately 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said.
