Vineyard Hockey Season Starts; Boys Win Two, Girls Lose One

In the start of what is expected to be another strong season, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School hockey team rolled over Mansfield at home Saturday 7-1 before taking down perennial power Whitman Hanson two days later 4-2.

The Vineyarders took eight shots on goal in the first period against Mansfield Saturday and connected three times as Jock Cooperrider, Elliot Bilzerian and Tad Gold all found the back of the net. Nick Billingham gave the home team a fourth goal in the second period, and the Vineyarders added three more in the final frame.

Vineyard Football Team Kicks Off With Solid Win

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team got off to a solid start of the season Friday with a convincing, no-nonsense 14-0 win over familiar rival Old Rochester on a rainy night in Mattapoisett.

The Vineyarders ran the option play to perfection all night, and senior Mike McCarthy scored both touchdowns on short runs in the first half to put the game away. A steady rain fell throughout the game making for soggy field conditions, but the Vineyarders’ defense was still able to clamp down and shut down the Bulldogs’ attack.

While other Islanders are out trick-or-treating or putting finishing touches on their costumes, the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School varsity football team will be spending Halloween on the field under the lights tonight when they play Cape Cod Tech at home in what is easily their most important game so far this season.

Cross Country Teams Run Strong, As Soccer Boys Get No Relief

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are continuing a tradition of excellence this season, with the boys sporting a 5-0 record and the girls a 4-0 record. For coach Joe Schroeder’s Vineyard team, this year’s impressive run is just the latest in a recent string of dominance.

Last Thursday, both the boys’ and girls’ teams overwhelmed Bishop Connolly in Fall River, each winning the top five slots. Megan Dreyer took first for the girls and Robbie Osmers led the boys.

The juggernaut Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team continued its ascent toward a championship on Tuesday, easily defeating a talented team from Monument High School in South Boston in the state divisional playoffs to advance to a Super Bowl showdown against Amesbury tomorrow at Bentley University in Waltham.

Tomorrow’s Eastern Massachusetts Division 3A championship game kicks off at 1 p.m.

Young Quarterback Carries Family Legacy to the Snap

It is a chilly November evening; the sun has just dipped below the horizon and Mike McCarthy, quarterback for the Vineyarders football team, stands in back of the high school answering a reporter’s questions about this weekend’s Island Cup game.

Nearby a group of cheerleaders is spray-painting signs and posters with words of encouragement for the team. Some of the signs will be used to decorate the bedrooms of the starters and seniors on the football team; others may be brought over to Nantucket this weekend to cheer on the Vineyarders during the game.

Vineyard Travels to Nantucket to Play for Storied Island Cup

The annual Island Cup game between the Vineyard and Nantucket football teams has long been a high-stakes affair, played to the bitter end for the right to dominate the world — or at least bragging rights between the two Island rivals.

And until six years ago the Whalers won the game on a regular basis. From 1993 to 1998 Nantucket won five out of six, and four in a row over the Vineyard.

News Update: 12/03 - Vineyarders Head to Superbowl

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team advances to the state Superbowl after an easy 42-14 win Tuesday against Monument High School from South Boston in the division 3A playoffs. The game was played at Taunton High School, with a large crowd of Vineyard fans in attendance.

The Vineyard will play Amesbury in the Superbowl this Saturday at Bentley University in Waltham.
