Shot Put Super star Represents Vineyard in New England Championship

Track and field senior Maggie Riseborough competed in the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships in New Britain, Conn., on June 8, marking the second straight year she has represented the Vineyard and the state at the meet. Riseborough qualified for New Englands with a top-four finish at the Massachusetts All-State meet on June 1, which featured athletes from all levels of high school competition. The Vineyard competes in division four.

At New Englands, Riseborough placed 24th in a field of 35 with a throw of 34 feet, six inches.

Keeping Track of the Record Breakers

The Bishop Feehan runners had no chance. Regional high school junior Jeremy Alley-Tarter opened his stride as soon as he left the starting line in the 800-metre run during last Wednesday’s home meet. He quickly pulled farther and farther away from the competition and crossed the finish line in 1:57:00, a full 10 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

Home sports action picks up after April vacation on Monday with boys’ lacrosse taking on Dartmouth at 3 p.m. On Tuesday girls’ lacrosse hosts league opponent Coyle and Cassidy at 3 p.m., and sailing takes on Barnstable at the Sailing Camp Park at 3 p.m.

Track Team Opens Season With Split Record

The high school track and field teams are off and running, with two wins for the boys and two losses for the girls in field events against visiting teams this week.

The boys’ squad had home wins over Abington and EAC opponent Somerset. The girls’ team fell to both opponents despite strong performances in field events. Senior Maggie Riseborough won the shot put and discus during Wednesday’s Somerset meet, senior Shavanae Anderson took first in the triple jump and long jump, and junior Mariah Campbell took first in the high jump.

Spring Sports Take Center Stage

Spring sports began this week as boys’ tennis and girls’ lacrosse played their first matches of the season on Thursday against Dover-Sherborn. Scores were unavailable at press time.

Boys’ lacrosse takes on Fairhaven today at home at 4 p.m. Track and field hosts Abington in a dual meet beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

What follows is the first in a two-part preview of the spring sports season. Next week will spotlight girls’ tennis, baseball, softball and sailing.
