One stimulates the imaginations of young and old. The second brings care to the uninsured. The third feeds schoolchildren with the fruits and wisdom of the earth.
All are invested in the well-being of the Island community.
Together, they serve the hearts, souls and bodies of Islanders in their daily work, said Women Empowered board member Ljuba Davis.
Women Empowered will celebrate three local women who make a big impact on the Island at a Women of the Year champagne brunch on Sept. 29 at the Harbor View Hotel. The women are Sarah Kuh with Vineyard Healthcare Access, Noli Taylor, who heads up the Island Grown Initiative and Lee Fierro from Island Theatre Workshop.
Women Empowered is proud to announce the first Empowered Woman of the Year Award. Nominations are now being accepted for the woman whose attributes and activities improve the lot of others on the Vineyard, either by her deeds or character.
Guests swarmed to Mediterranean restaurant early Saturday afternoon to honor Empowered Woman of the Year Cindy Doyle and to observe the passing of the torch from former Women Empowered executive director Kaye Flathers to successor Sheila Bracy.
“We were thrilled with the turnout,” said Ms. Bracy. She attributes the success of the brunch to the volunteers who dedicated their time to organizing the event.
Women Empowered, an Island nonprofit providing life skills coaching services for women, men and families struggling with financial challenges, presented its first monetary grant to another Island nonprofit. Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary was one of four grant applicants and was chosen to receive $3,000 to provide on-the-job training and a small salary for a visitor service assistant at Felix Neck.
The grant is made possible as a result of a donation to Women Empowered from Malcolm Jones, a West Tisbury resident.
