Martha's Vineyard Commission Candidates

Fourteen candidates are running for nine seats on the Martha’s Vineyard Commission. The Gazette emailed questions to all the candidates asking them about their reasons for running, qualifications, and to speak to the unique mission of the 41-year-old regional planning agency. Linda Bauer Sibley of West Tisbury said institutional memory is important at the commission, which has unprecedented regulatory and planning powers.

Ernest Douglas Sederholm, an attorney from West Tisbury, said development is necessary but the Island's natural beauty must be respected and preserved.

Allen Look, a construction consultant from West Tisbury, said he wants to service the Island's health and longevity.

Josh Goldstein, a Vineyard Haven innkeeper, said he can act as a voice for the next generation of Islanders.

Myron Garfinkle, a retired businessman from West Tisbury, said he brings a fresh perspective and a love for the Island.

Clarence A. Barnes 3rd, of Vineyard Haven, said the Vineyard can learn from its history as it moves into a year-round community.

Richard James Toole, a carpenter from Oak Bluffs, said he is concerned about the future of the Island.

Brian Smith, a realtor from Oak Bluffs, said he wants to protect the Vineyard while promoting sustainable growth.

Fred Hancock of Oak Bluffs said the MVC is an important organization for preserving the Island.

Susan Desmarais of Oak Bluffs, a retired health care professional, is a lifelong conservationist and environmentalist.

John Breckenridge of Oak Bluffs said the commission's planning responsibility is key to maintaining the Island.

Christina Brown, a retired assistant to the Edgartown planning board, has a particular interest in affordable housing on the Vineyard.

Robert M. Doyle from Chilmark, a retired banker and substance abuse counselor, believes in the mission of the MVC.

James Vercruyssse, a cabinetmaker from Aquinnah, said he is looking forward to working on important planning issues.
