Sengekontacket Pond will be closed to shellfishing over the holiday weekend because of rainfall on July 1.

According to the town of Oak Bluffs, which posted the information on their website, the pond is closed to shellfishing in all areas, and is scheduled to re-open on Tuesday, July 7.

Red flags fly at the two bridges on the pond to indicate shellfishing closures.

The state mandates that saltwater ponds are closed to shellfishing after heavy rainfall as a precaution against pollutants that can be washed into the pond from roads and other sources, like waterfowl.

Oak Bluffs Harbor is also closed to shellfishing. All of Lagoon Pond is open.
