This is not one of my usual columns, but I wanted to share this story with you. It was a very different March for my family and I. The storms days without electricity and the birth of a new family member.

I went to Wareham to help my great niece Amanda and her fiancé Thom who were expecting their second son on March 3. Jonah decided that it was not going to happen and he was happy where he was. So after a doctor’s visit Amanda was told if she did not go into labor by the 12th Jonah had no choice but to be born. He was stubborn and we all thought that she was going in on Monday but early Sunday morning he started on his own way out but not without a fight. He was still very happy where he was.

So the wait was on and I got a text at 11:30 a.m. saying if I wanted to see a baby being born to be at the hospital at 12:30 p.m. I had so many emotions going through me that I was overjoyed and scared at the same time.

I arrived at the hospital at 12:20 p.m. and walked into Amanda’s room to find three nurses, Thom and all the whistle and tubes and cords all around. I asked what I needed to do and they told me to sit down for a while as Jonah had decided to take a break. When things started up again it was two hours of so many emotions. One of seeing Amanda and what she was going through, and watching as the nurses did their job and encouraging her along when she thought she couldn’t go on. When the doctor came in to make the decision if she should continue or go for a C-section because Jonah was not facing down and was in a hard position it was all systems go and Amanda changed her position for a minute and two minutes later at 4:01 p.m. Jonah came onto the world on his side.

I had so many emotions. Amanda was fine, Jonah a very healthy and big — 10.5 pounds and 22.5 inches long. It was so great to see my great great nephew being born, but it was amazing to see the miracle of birth and I will be forever grateful to Amanda and Thom for an awesome experience, and Jonah will always have a special place in my heart because of this experience. Now they just have to get big brother Oliver used to his new baby brother.

Jonah was born on March 11 and he was and is healthy, but he had a small infection and following hospital protocol he was required to stay in the hospital to make sure he was okay. So after two rounds of antibiotics I can happily report he went home on March 19 with his Mom, Dad and big brother Oliver. I am sure things are settling down with them all at home.

Next week will be the normal column, if I can get my feet back on the ground.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
