It is the end of May and my heat was on. This is the first time in a few years that this has happened as the heat is usually off April 1. But now I hear next week will be in the 70s, maybe even 80, which is not surprise for us New Englanders. We have no spring and jump right into summer.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Cayden Bresett, who celebrated his day May 23; Anita Cabral, May 25; Lauany De Souza and Anthony Pereira, May 26; and to Amanda De Costa and Scout Sherman who celebrate their day today May 29.

Special birthday wishes go out to Joan Connolly who celebrated her 90th birthday May 23. Joan lives in Edgartown with her husband of 65 years Bill Connolly. They have four children and nine grandchildren who wish her a loving, wonderful Happy Birthday.

I have to say that Joan is one of our customers at Donaroma’s where she has shopped for her special gardens for 30 years. I have never personally seen her gardens but I know she spends a lot of time with them and she knows exactly what flowers she uses every year. So Happy Birthday Joan and here is to many more.

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Paul and Linda Condlin who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary May 24.

Memorial Day came and went without fanfare. It was strange not to have a parade and we had people on the Island, but I feel not as many as we have seen in the past. But people were buying flowers for their gardens and folks are growing their own vegetables. I don’t know if it is because they now have more time for their gardens or they don’t want to go to the stores and buy veggies. Of course, it will take awhile for them to grow but we all know there is nothing like fresh vegetables.

I have always loved lilac’s, Lily of the Valley and irises. The scent of them always brings us to spring. And for those of use who participated in the March to the Sea traditions, the scent brings us back to grade school. They were the flowers you would pick from home, carry to the harbor and throw them from the pier to honor the veterans on Memorial Day. My mother would pick them first thing in the morning and wrap them with a wet paper towels and then aluminum foil so I didn’t get wet and would keep them alive. I don’t know if the kids still do the same thing but I know every time I smell a lilac I go back in time and walking to the sea.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
