Don’t rain on my parade! The drizzle did not stop our enthusiasm for the annual Edgartown Christmas parade last Saturday. Besides the fire trucks, the horses and the candy, David Whitmon’s Peace on Earth velomobile was its usual welcome sight. Same time, next year.

After hearing my parents’ and grandparents’ stories of the Great Depression and after reading Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, I wanted to be a hobo. As usual, Holly Nadler beat me to it. Holly will be at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 to sign copies of the first printing of her new book, The Hobo Diaries. I’ll see you there.

Speaking of Island authors, a lovely picture of our own Thomas Dresser with our new director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce, Carolina Cooney, was posted. They were attending a Christmas party. Tom’s next book is coming out in May 2023. It is about our Island in the Roaring Twenties. Odd, I did not know Tom was here then! In any case, all 14 of his books are available, some signed, at Bunch of Grapes and Edgartown Books. Or you can buy on his website and he will send you an autographed copy.

If you are interested in writing, poetry and visual arts, remember that from now through the spring, Pathways Arts is open and free at the Chilmark Tavern every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for its poetry and writing series. We have readers and you may sign up to read your work. You can also watch or participate via Zoom. This makes me think of Primo Lombardi, with all my love.

A new Island author will be dynamo Emma Lovewell, dancer, model and Peloton instructor. Emma was recently a keynote speaker at a Microsoft function for their Aspire program. Yay for Emma, daughter of our wonderful writer, musician, photographer and poet Mark Lovewell. He lives in Our Town.

Sculptor and artist Barney Zeitz has a show up at Mocha Mott’s in Vineyard Haven for the rest of this month. All items in the exhibit are for sale. Call him to make arrangements to purchase a gift for yourself or someone else.

If you need tips on keeping your dog warm in this weather, Edgartown Animal Control has a wonderful information sheet to help you. Avail yourselves of this.

With great sadness I must tell you that Kathy Sue Benner-Berninger, owner of KB Painting and Cleaning, has passed. A lovely woman.

Attorney Alfred C.W. Daniels, formerly of Oak Bluffs, died recently. He was a great person. I shall miss him.

Birthday greetings go out to Justin Elia, my favorite photographer, who creates magic with his camera. Many happy returns.
