State and Island fire officials believe a house fire that injured a man Saturday in Oak Bluffs was an accident.
A fire broke out at a home on Laura’s Way at about 10:12 p.m. Saturday, according to the Oak Bluffs fire department. The single-family home was totally in flames when firefighters arrived and nearby residents were evacuated.
It took fire crews from Oak Bluffs, Tisbury and Edgartown about four hours to put the blaze out, according to a statement from Oak Bluffs Monday. The state Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire started on the first floor along a wall.
Investigators found no evidence that the fire was intentionally set and they believed the cause was accidental.
A man who was asleep in the home when the fire started got out of the burning building before the department arrived. He was initially brought to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and then transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital for injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
He was the only man in the house, according to officials.
The fire was under control at about 3 a.m. Sunday.
