A new Oak Bluffs event space is changing its name after being hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit.
With last night’s approval from the Oak Bluffs select board, the multilevel restaurant and entertainment venue from former television personality AJ Calloway will change its name from Inkwell Beach House to Inkwell Beach Club.
The name swap came after Kahina Van Dyke, who owns the Inkwell Beach House hotel in Oak Bluffs, sued the event space owner in U.S. District Court earlier this month.
Ms. Van Dyke’s lawsuit, which is ongoing, includes allegations of trademark infringement, unfair competition and unfair and deceptive acts and practices. In the suit, Ms. Van Dyke requests compensation for damages and for Mr. Calloway to stop using the Inkwell Beach House name.
Attorney Geoghan Coogan, who represented Mr. Calloway’s business at Tuesday’s meeting, declined to comment on any relation between the lawsuit and the name change, citing his lack of involvement in the trademark infringement case.
Mr. Calloway first got the select board’s blessing for the venture in April, when he pitched his “event ecosystem,” then called Inkwell Beach House, for the space formerly occupied by MV Chowder Company.
But Ms. Van Dyke, whose use of the Inkwell Beach House name in relation to her hotels dates back to 2018, released a statement on her company’s website earlier this month denying any connection to Mr. Calloway or his business.
“We are not affiliated, associated with or in any partnership with any other newly formed entities conducting business at any other locations,” the statement reads. “We share this clarification to be in service to our customers, partners, and community — who deserve to know exactly who they are doing business with.”
Ms. Van Dyke declined to comment on the name change this week. Mr. Calloway and his attorney did not immediately return the Gazette’s requests for comment.
