The driver who crashed a minivan into a Steamship Authority ferry in Vineyard Haven last week has died, officials confirmed Monday.

The 91-year-old woman, who was not identified by authorities, hit the stern doors of the Island Home last Wednesday and was rushed to the hospital. The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office said the woman had died, and said the incident was being considered an accident that would not result in any charges.

The District Attorney’s office referred the Gazette to the police for further details. Tisbury police said that state police were leading the investigation; state police did not respond to further requests for comment.

The incident took place at about 9:15 a.m. on July 8 at the Vineyard Haven terminal. The Island Home was waiting to start boarding when passengers saw the minivan speed through the parking lot, up the transfer bridge and into the ferry.

The woman struck the loading doors, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. First responders had to use hydraulic rescue tools to get her out of the vehicle. She was brought to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital before being flown to a Boston hospital for further treatment.

No other passengers or crew members were injured in the incident; the ferry had no other vehicles aboard it at the time.

The Island Home was taken out of service so the U.S. Coast Guard and Steamship officials could inspect the damage to the doors. The ferry was repaired that same day, according to the ferry line.
