As I write this the weather is on and telling us that the humidity is going away and the temperature on the islands will be in the 70s. I hope by the next writing of this column I can report that they were telling the truth. I have, however, had people tell me how much they love this heat and humidity.

Happy Birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Ana Basto, who celebrated August 3; and to Luke Amaral and Benjamin Sylvia who celebrated August 4.

I know I am not the only one that is probably exhausted from trying to keep up with the Olympics. I start watching and tell myself I am only going to watch this one event then end up being drawn into the next. I am not a track and field person but was drawn into that and by the time I go to bed I am still all wound up from running or jumping with the competitors and it takes a while to fall asleep. Thank goodness it is only for two weeks.

There will be and Edgartown Beach Clean Up on August 24, form 8 to 10 a.m. Check in at Lighthouse Beach, Wilsons Landing, or Fuller Beach to meet you host who will supply you with gloves and bags. No need to sign up, just show up.

It always has been this way but this year the battle between the deer and the gardener has been the worst. We have sold more deer spray and rabbit spray as they are out in full force also. Some people are determined to win the battle and then there are those who are just trying to co-exist. The question is what do they not like to eat and usually the answer is plants with texture or taste but they are not being fussy at all. I have a rabbit that is so bold it sits in the garden and watches me throw the ball to my dog and never moves. I fear it will be a battle that no one wins.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
