Early voting for the September primary starts later this week across the Island.

Democrats and Republicans will be able to weigh in on several races starting on Saturday, when all six towns open for early voting for the Sept. 3 primary. Early voting will then be open through August 30.

The biggest local race is the Democratic primary between state representative candidates Arielle Faria and Thomas Moakley. The pair are vying to represent the Vineyard, Nantucket and parts of Falmouth in the State House.

There is no Republican candidate in the race, meaning the winner of the Democratic primary will likely take the seat in the November general election.

On the Republican primary ballot, Islanders will also cast votes for the Republican candidate for U.S. Senator. The three candidates are Robert Antonellis, Ian Cain and John Deaton. The winner will likely face U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is running unopposed in the Democratic primary.

There are no other contested races for Island voters.

Each town has different voting hours from August 24 to August 30 for early voting, a practice that started during the pandemic.

Ahead of voting, The League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard is having a candidate forum for the primary on Wednesday at the Edgartown Library. Both Ms. Faria and Mr. Moakley are expected to be there.

The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
