Firefighters were called 741 Main street at about 8:45 p.m. and the family that was inside the home was out safe by the time the police department responded, said Tisbury fire acting chief Patrick Rolston.

The first responders at the house saw flames going through the roof, and a second alarm was called to bring in firefighters from across the Island.

The majority of the fire was on the second story of the house, according to Chief Rolston.

“The second floor is heavily damaged...The roof was pretty much collapsed,” he said, adding that there is also water damage from putting out the fire. “They’ll probably have to start all over, unfortunately.”

Firefighters were able to put out the fire by about 11 p.m., with the help of fire crews from Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, and West Tisbury, as well as the sheriff’s office and Tisbury police.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Chief Rolston.

The waterfront home on .6 acres of land belongs to trial lawyer James Ferraro, of Fishers Island, Florida.
